Part of the documentary network of the University of Toulouse-II-Le Mirail, the central library was designed in 1997 by the architect Pierre Riboulet. It offers a collection of about 600 000 items in the fields taught at the university, mainly the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Around a central patio, its 2 wings allow generous levels of natural light through the glass walls. The surface area of 15000 m2 is spread over 6 levels - 3 floors of various subjects and reading rooms offering free access to collections (books, periodicals, theses, multimedia and e-resources) and 3 floors of stacks, offices and parking spaces.
Much work has been done on the internal design of the public levels, with single and double heights utilising the cool northern light. The core of the library, decorated in light wood, hosts information desks and lending facilities.
Standing close to the entrance of the university, the library offers a pathway between the tuition part of the university and the research area : passing through the library allows faculty members to access the Maison de la Recherche, where the laboratories are located.
